New Student Guide
Welcome to MIAGE
Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Utah's Master of Science in International Affairs and Global Enterprise program! Please take advantage of the information on this page to help you prepare for your first day of classes!
Your first task should be to read the MIAGE Student Handbook, which you can download using the link below:
In addition to reviewing the MIAGE Student Handbook, there are several other steps you should take to ensure you are ready for your first day of graduate school! You will need your student identification number to complete some of the tasks listed on this page. You should receive your number in your official acceptance letter from the University Office of Graduate Admissions. Contact the MIAGE office staff if you have any questions.
Preparing for Your First Day
Apply for Financial Aid
If you have not already applied for financial aid, it is important that you do this as soon as possible, since the deadlines for many scholarships close very early. You can view more resources on appyling for financial aid on the financial aid page of the MIAGE website.
Buy Textbooks
Be sure to order your textbooks at least a week before classes start to ensure that you have all of your materials prepared. Some courses have digital textbooks included automatically in the tuition and fees. If you prefer to purchase those books yourself, you will need to manually opt out from the inclusive access so that you are not charged. Books can be purchased from the University of Utah's Campus store or from third party sellers. If you have qeustions about your textbooks, you should reach out to the professors for your courses.
Create Student ID Card
MIAGE students can apply for their Student ID card either on campus, or by uploading a photo through their website. Your student ID grants you access to a variety of discounts and services at the University of Utah, including the Library, Printing Services, and Campus Recreation Services. It can also be used as a public transportation pass for most Utah Transit Authority (UTA) services. In addition to these benefits, many businesses, stores, and University departments offer discounts to University of Utah students.
Finalize Prerequisite Classes
If you have not done so already, contact the Program Coordinator to make sure all of your prerequisites are taken care of. If you wish to register for PUBPL 6000 for the summer semester, please let the program manager know so that your program start date can be moved to the summer semester. More information on the PUBPL 6000 course is available on the admissions requirements page under the "Statistics, Macro and Micro Economics" tab.
Admission to the MIAGE program is conditional upon the successful completion (earning a C or better) of these three courses. Students who are unable to provide proof of this by the start of the semester will be dropped from their classes.
Find Housing
Most students choose to live off campus. Popular areas are The Avenues, East Central, Liberty Park and Sugar House. The University has an Off-Campus Housing page that can be used to search for housing and roommates. https://www.offcampushousing.utah.edu/

International Students

Plan Schedule and Register for Classes
Students are strongly encouraged to start planning their course schedules early. While course availability can vary by semester, it is good to have a general idea of which courses you want to take, and in which semesters you plan to enroll in your core courses. Check out the links below for more information.
Purchase Parking Pass
As a student at the University of Utah, you are able to use your student ID card to access most public transportation throughout Salt Lake Valley. If you plan on driving to campus, you will need to either purchase a University Parking Pass or use one of the paid parking lots on campus. Research Internships
Many internship deadlines fall well in advance of their start date. It is important that you identify several potential internship locations and their application deadlines to ensure that you have the best chance possible to be accepted. Set up CIS Account and Umail
- Log in to cis.utah.edu using your University ID (UNID) included in your admissions letter and default password (which is your birthdate in MMDDYY format). Your CIS account is where you will register for classes, pay tuition, view grades, and more.
- After you set up your CIS account, you can set up your university email account (umail) at umail.utah.edu. The majority of communications from the University will be sent to your umail, so it is imperative that you check it often, or forward it to an email address that you check regularly. You should always use your umail when communicating with professors or university departments, since many departments are not allowed to send personal information about your academic records to third-party email servers.
Sign up for Health Insurance
University of Utah students can sign up for student health insurance through the Student Health Center for an additional fee. Check out the options using the link below.
Submit Immunization Records
All University of Utah students (with some exceptions) are required to submit immunization records prior to their first day of class. These can be submitted online at the website listed below. Failure to submit your immunization records or obtain an exemption will result in a registration hold on your student account.
